U.S. Senate, stop kicking us when we're down!
The US Senate defeated a measure that would provide $1.3 billion for summer jobs for young people. They also voted to end relief efforts for poor families with young children. Jeeze louise, Mrs. and Mr. Senators, is it that much fun to kick us while we're down? Well, the youth of America are kicking back!
The economic instability of our social system has a cascading effect on teen employment. As employers tighten their belts over the first six months of the year, they inevitably cut back on the hiring of teenagers during the summer months. Additionaly, the job market in America right now is so bad that more young adults, including college students and "prime-aged" (early twenties) working adults, are competing with American teens for many entry level positions.
Out of work by 18? There has to be a better way. There is an immediate need for Congress and the Obama Administration to pass national legislation to expand teen and young-adult employment.
President Obama, United States Congress: take care of American teens and American families! Renew funding for summer youth employment.
I am signing my name for the Youth of America, the unemployed and persevering leaders of our future.
Congress, the next move is yours.
In the coming weeks, we will hand deliver these petitions to our elected officials in D.C.
